KusogaKick is based on the first Hololive Alternative PV which features Shion performing the attack against the Giant Dragon form of Kiryu Coco... and landing nowhere near her gigantic target.[1]
According to Shion, the attack has a 90% hit rate.[2]
The attack both in the PV and in HoloCure could be referencing the Rider Kick, the popular finishing moves of the Kamen Rider franchise.
Black Magic could be a reference to Holo no Graffiti specifically #34 and #117 in which Shion uses her magic to teleport.
Cheeky Brat or Kusogaki(糞餓鬼, Shitty Brat) in Japanese is a reference to Shion's character archetype.[3] The term describes a young-looking character who has a condescending, cocky and forceful attitude towards other people, hence the name.
Shion herself mostly sticks to her onstream persona but she also showed moments of kindness and understanding.[4]
Magic Garlic is a reference to Shion's Garlic fan nickname that was created by Western fans based on the color and shape of her hair. [5]
The garlic comparison is a sub-meme of Minato Aqua's Onion meme whose hatless head when viewed from above looks similar to an unpeeled red onion. Due to the closeness of Aqua and Shion and popularity of AkuShio(Aqua x Shion), Shion was associated with a similar meme especially from Reddit (r/hololive).[6]
According to Kay, the original plan was for the skill to reference Shion's real life cat Rui, similar to Ame's Bubba, which fit the witch and familiar theming. However, Rui would pass away[7] before the game was finished and in consideration for Shion's situation, Kay changed the familiar to that of a Garlic.[8]
↑Kay Yu (2023/02/14). Kaynimatic on Reddit. “... Originally I designed the skill to be a Cat familiar. The classic Witch and cat thing, with Shion having a real pet cat. That's why it moves however it wants to, simulating cat behavior, and scratching things along it's path. At least that was the plan... Until it was around that time that Shions irl cat had passed away. And I thought if Shion had a skill with her cat after it just recently passed away, it would have been really risky, possibly in bad taste. Absolutely do not want to even risk upsetting Shion, so I changed the cat to garlic. ...”
