File naming conventions

I'd like to estabilish a consistent naming convention for images.

Currently, we have couple of different things going, which in my opinion is a bit messy.

  • Weapons use a prefix 'Item', which is then followed by the name or abbreviation of the name of the weapon. Each word is separated by a hyphen. E.g. Item-spider-cooking.png
  • Character images are mostly named after nickname followed by 'portrait' or 'run' suffix depending on whether it's the menu icon or in-game sprite. Each word is separated by a hyphen. E.g. ame-portrait.png
  • Skill images are prefixed with '<character nickname>-skill' followed by skill name abbreviation. Each word is separated by a hyphen. E.g. ame-skill-eye.png
  • Enemy images simply go by the name followed by x2 if the image was upscaled. Words separated by spaces. E.g. Thicc Bubba.gif

When you are looking up the image to add, it is a bit inconvenient having to figure out which logic the uploader used in the naming and whether the subject is referred to with full name or abbreviation. Makes it also harder to use the images in templates.

My suggestion would be to simply name each image after the subject as it is presented in-game, followed by suffix depending on what kind of image it is. Each part separated by spaces.

Menu icons (Weapon/item/skill/character etc.) use 'Icon', e.g.:

  • Spider Cooking Icon.png
  • Detective Eye Icon.png
  • Amelia Watson Icon.png

Character and enemy sprites use 'Sprite', e.g.:

  • Amelia Watson Sprite.png

Animated sprites use '<action>Anim', e.g.:

  • Amelia Watson RunAnim.gif
  • Amelia Watson IdleAnim.gif

Do you think we could work with this kind of setup? It would be easy to sort this out now that there isn't too much content out yet. Other suggestions are also welcome. I find it more important to have consistent naming across the board than implement my scheme.

This looks good - Cylindrical (talk) 02:08, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
I suppose if there is no opposition we can continue with this. Please use this naming scheme for future uploads. I'll also start moving old files bit by bit, so expect some file links to be broken temporarily. Any help is also appreciated, as this will otherwise take a while because fandom only allows regular users to move two pages every 5 minutes or so.

Wiki Theme

We probably need to start working on how the wiki looks like. Maybe have a Light blue/White/Pink/Yellow theme like the HoloCure logo. I'm not very knowledgeable about this so I can't help much about it. - Cylindrical (talk) 05:45, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

Not very knowledgeable in this subject either, but I believe only permitted users can edit the theme. Regardless, to give my input, I think we should go with the (light) blue as the main color, because that is kind of the main color for the game UI as well, and use the others on the side. Maybe could use the start screen BG as wiki BG also, with a semi-transparent center section (what's it called).

Skill box templates

I made skill box templates for character pages:

We should start using these, so we have consistent formatting of the ability info on all pages, and any changes to the display can be applied everywhere at the same time. If you don't like how this looks, feel free to change the layout or hit me up with your suggestion.

Style guide

With the new update around one and a half week away, and the activity on the wiki about to going up again, I took the initiative to set up an initial draft of the HoloCure wiki:Style guide for the purpose of having an easy reference of previously agreed practices. To keep it short, I referenced a couple of other wikis for the most common practices only, and added the few that have been talked about on this wiki or kind of silently agreed upon (such as the icon upsize). If there is anything I've missed that was agreed upon previously, or probably should be added or removed, I hope we can discuss here, or the style guide's talk page. –taQtaQ (talk) 16:21, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

Discussion on forking to wiki.gg

We are looking into migrating the wiki from Fandom over to wiki.gg, which is a platform oriented for gaming wikis. There are a few reasons for this:

  • The user experience here on Fandom is far from optimal, especially for unregistered users: The ads take massive amounts of screen space, sometimes appearing in the middle of the articles and pushing other elements around. The site does not allow us to edit certain UI elements, such as the sidebars, and sometimes pushes "quizzes" that are not made by us. Load times of pages in general are bad.
  • Wiki.gg, on the other hand allows more control over the UI. It only features few in-house ads from the sponsor of the wiki, indie.io, and doesn't insert bloat content in the middle of articles.
  • Fandom in general is starting to have a bad reputation. Various larger wikis have already left Fandom, for example, Terraria Wiki and Hearthstone Wiki have moved over to wiki.gg and Minecraft Wiki migrated to an independent host.

However, we would want to avoid the situation where the editorbase is split between two wikis, so we need a consensus in the community. Therefore, I'm hoping all active editors would participate in the discussion and give their opinion. The discussion will be open for two weeks (until 17 October 2023 23:59 (UTC)). Please clearly state whether you support or oppose the suggestion. — taQtaQ (talk) 12:05, 3 October 2023 (UTC)

Support, for the reasons listed above. Arkainn (talk) 03:19, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
Support, although I'm fine with anything since I'm not using the full Fandom experience anyway. Feking83 (talk) 05:22, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
Support. Fandom/Wikia is a shell of its former self and everyone who can should jump ship ASAP. Bubbyboytoo81018 (talk) 13:14, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
Support. Fandom has continually shown that their best interests are not in maintaining the trust of its users. I've been working on wiki.gg wikis since its inception with Terraria and the Thorium Mod wikis, and the experience has been just like the Gamepedia of old, prior to Fandom's acquisition. The discussion is hereby closed. Given the unanimous support, we shall proceed with the move. I'll put in an application to get the wiki set up, and keep you updated on the progress. — taQtaQ (talk) 14:50, 18 October 2023 (UTC)
